YAYOI KUSAMA. THE ARTIST EVERYONE LOVES

As described by The Art Newspaper following a survey of leading international museum institutions, Yayoi Kusama is the world’s most popular artist. The Guardian magazine confirms this survey: no fewer than five million visitors have attended exhibitions of the iconic Japanese artist over the last five years alone. Yayoi Kusama’s transversal and boundary-crossing popularity can also be seen on a digital level: the tag #yayoikusama referencing her work has been used over a million times on Instagram.

The artist represented Japan at the 45th Venice Biennale in 1993. Over the past decade, she has held solo exhibitions in major institutions in North America, Japan, Korea, Singapore, China, Australia, Russia, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Spain, England, France, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland. In 2016 Kusama was selected as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME magazine. The same year, she was the first woman to receive the Order of Culture, one of the highest honours bestowed by the Imperial Family. Kusama’s works are exhibited in major museums including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Tate Modern in London and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. In 2012, the artist began a long collaboration with the French fashion house Louis Vuitton, creating a customised line of clothing and accessories.
